26 Chapters based around experiences that newly arrived Geno experiences while trying to find the Star Pieces.

Illumine: (verb) Light up; Brighten.

Nimbus Land was still in full swing even as the sun started to sink below the horizon. All thrilled to know that their king had not been sick and that Mallow had finally returned home. Much like the celebration at Seaside Town, there was an array of food and music filled the slowly chilling air. 

However, there were a few stark differences this time. This celebration took place in a large, outdoor dance hall. Ornately decorated and lit with the largest golden chandeliers the party had ever seen. Garro demoed his creations, each party member getting their own golden statue. Finally, Geno was actually participating this time around. 

He joyfully partook in the food that lined the large table, mainly the sweets. Even after Peach asked that he eats something sustainable. The conversations, while few and far in between, were flattering with the citizens thanking Geno from saving them. Eventually he claimed a table and chair, feeling a little overwhelmed by everything. Deciding to just enjoy his pile of sweets while he watched everyone dance. Foot tapping to the beat of the music.

“Hey you,” Mario approached, “You doing okay over here?”

Geno nodded, swallowing his latest bite before answering with, “I’m not one for socializing, apparently.” 

“That’s fine, you don’t have to. Hope you don’t mind if I join you?”

“No, go ahead.” Geno smiled as he watched Mario pull up a chair so they sat next to each other.

“So, this is, what, the second party you’ve been to?” asked Mario.

“Well, technically I wasn’t very attentive during my first one.”

“Oh, right.”

“I will note that this one is far more enjoyable.”

Mario laughed at that, Geno holding back his laughter as he’d just taken a large bite.

“That’s good to hear.”

They fell silent for a while. Geno casually follows the dancers before him. Fascinated at how people could move in such a way and make it look effortless. Some even appeared to be gliding, floating across the floor as if not held down by gravity.

“Did you want to dance?”

Geno was pulled back to Mario, the human’s cheeks holding a soft pink. “What?”

“Dance, did you want to dance?”

“Oh, uh, probably not the best idea. You didn’t see my first few steps. Not exactly graceful.”

“It’s been awhile since then. I’m sure you’ll be fine.”

Geno shifted nervously, “...I’d rather not risk ruining everyone’s good time.”

Mario frowned at that, “You won’t.”

“I’ll be safe over here. I’m okay, trust me.”

The attempt to move away from the request fell on deaf ears. As the next second Geno was gently, but strongly, pulled from his chair. His soul shivering with nervousness as Mario led him further onto the floor.

“W-Wait, Mario!”

“You’ll be fine, I promise.”

Geno’s nerves were not helped when they stopped near the center of the floor. “Are you sure about this?”

“Everyone’s enjoying themselves, no one’s even looking at us. Here, put your hands on my shoulders. And I’ll place my hands here…”

The panicked fear Geno held fell away and replaced with absolute joy as Mario placed his hands on the puppet’s waist. “O-Okay, what do we do now?”

“We just say to the beat,” Mario said easily, already moving to the music. Geno felt a little jittery when he started to move as well. Eventually falling into the same rhythm as Mario. “There, see, you got it.”

“I still feel strange,” Geno mumbled weakly, “and we’re not moving like everyone else.”

“Dancing has a lot of different movements. We’re just taking it slow. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing.”

Letting out a slow breath, Geno lowered his shoulder to try and relax further. His eyes couldn’t remain still though. With Mario so close, Geno felt weird just staring at the human. But looking elsewhere resulted in watching everyone else dancing which would raise Geno’s worries once more.

“Have I told you that Peach attempted to teach me to ballroom dance?”

Geno’s eyes landed on Mario, who was smiling softly.

“No. I don’t think you have.”

“It was a disaster. Apparently, I can combo jumps like no one before me, But moving in an elegant formation is just not for me. Just can’t do it.”

“I’m sure it wasn’t that bad.”

“Peach couldn’t walk for a week.”

Geno couldn’t help but laugh. The sound somehow rang louder than the music playing. But he didn’t seem to notice, slowly calming down “I thought you were supposed to keep her safe?”

“Hey, I do that just fine!”

“Uh huh, sure you do.”

“Well, just for that.”

Geno let out a rather unflattering shriek as he was suddenly lifted off the ground. It quickly turned into another round of laughter as he was easily swung around. Gently being put down on the ground with Mario wrapping his arms around Geno gently.

“Don’t do that!” Geno hissed, still giggling.

“You’re laughing, you liked it.”

“Shush, I can’t believe you did that.”

“You’re still giggling.”

“Shush! I’m trying to be mad at you.”

“Oh, guess it’s time to fix that.”

The joyous laughter rang out once more. This time joined by Mario’s. Both seemed to ignore the music as they continued to rather clumsily twirl around the dance floor. Others were enjoying the display with their own, far more quiet laughter. 

This interesting dance stopped when the song started to come to an end. Both breathless from the movement and laughter, which was dying down to heavy breathing. 

“You’re ridiculous,” Geno pointed out.

“You love me for it.” Mario easily argued back.

His already furiously thumping soul seemed to leap from his body. Geno gave a nervous but please smiled as he whispered back, “I do… I really do…”

The room suddenly started to grow dim. The previous song ending with a new, slower song now starting. Following with the quiet calm, Mario silently pulled Geno closer. Wrapping his arm around the puppet’s waist tighter, having Geno rest his head on the human’s shoulder. The other hand gently gripped onto one of Geno’s.

It felt as if he soul was singing. Geno closed his eyes as he relaxed further into Mario’s hold. He hadn’t felt this comfortable, this content, this happy before. It was a confusing feeling but something that Geno was more than willing to immerse himself in the feeling. For as long as he’d been alive, even with the lowest points he’d met, he’d never felt so alive before. 

He loved being here. He loved fighting for and defending those who couldn’t. And he absolutely love and adored- 

“Geno?”

Said puppet hummed softly.

“Are you…glowing?”

At that, Geno opened his eyes. The cracks where the joints connected had beams of lights emitting from them. The hollowed portions of his body seemed to shine from the same light. All of this was made more apparent by how dark the room had become. Geno hyper aware of how many eyes were on him. 

“T-This is new…” Geno said weakly, offering a little laugh. He looked back to Mario when he felt a hand placed on his cheek. The human looking absolutely star struck. 

“Mario?”

Face breaking into a warm smile, Mario gently pulled the other forward to press his lips to Geno’s cheeks. 

“You’re beautiful.”

Geno was certain his Star companions could see him from their home with how brightly he shined.

aiden & james were my favorite characters i think! <333 i really liked their development i love gay people i screamed at their first real kiss

it took a while for me to get used to every character because of their mics and acting. some of the acting was not believable at all and was the reason i dislikes some characters for a bit (cough rosa maria cough) before eventually warming up to them. it’s clear they improved a lot and found better actors for season 1. i’m curious how the S2 actors will be in S3.

maggy was genuinely annoying and not just because of her voice. sorry :(

Nothing is set in stone for me. I see other people’s ideas that I like and change up in my head a lot so anything I say here can probably change. Also I was gonna draw the characters with their flags or something but considering I can’t decide, I am just gonna ramble.

Norma: I’ve seen people call her a lesbian, which I like a lot, but I can also see her as asexual or at least aromantic. An aro lesbian seems like a nice fit for her. I can also see her as either a cis woman or trans woman, keeping the she/her pronouns.

Lizzie: I think I saw someone use all pronouns for Lizzie and I honestly love that. So like for me, He/It/They/She, mainly It/They with He/She being put in every so often. I’ll probably forget about this tho, but I really like that as an idea! Gender-wise would probably be either agender, genderfluid, or nonbinary. I’m liking agender. For sexuality... hmmm, this one I’m not sure about, I’d honestly like it to be asexual as well, but that I just because I really like Lizzie and want to project onto them, but also being pan or bi is something they could definitely be!

Morris: He/Him for Morris, and probably gay, or bi/pan/omni leaning a bit to the masc side, tho he probably doesn’t realize that yet. I can see him being pretty fluid and open in his sexuality, willing to try new things when he can. Um, probably a cis man, could be nonbinary.

Adam: Either a straight trans man, or an intersex person who likes women. Pronouns would probably be mainly he/him but he’d experiment with other pronouns and neopronouns, especially with Lizzie. Trying new things to see what sticks or doesn’t. Honestly I can see Adam trying yo/yoself pronouns for a while, maybe they stick or not, idk.

Sam: Definitely a neopronoun user. Has a whole list. Any pronouns work for Sam, except maybe it/its pronouns. So like, the standard she/her/they, but also things like ze/xir/mew/star. I can even see them using emojis when texting as pronouns. Literally just have fun with pronouns with Sam, she’d love it. And xe’d be aromantic but wanting a queer platonic relationship someday. With gender they would still identify as a woman, but does not care about gendered terms being used on them though likes it when people mix things up for fun instead of just using the same identifiers for xir.

Gisu: Trans woman. She/her. Either like straight or poly. Or like polyamorous but only attracted to guys, something like that. She can appreciate a woman’s beauty, and could romantically date one, but is sexually attracted to guys, or at the very least masc people. I don’t know if I am explaining this right. Though, honestly in some interpretations of Gisu I can see her being aromantic or just unlabelled. The only reason I am leaning towards the first part is because I am starting to come around to the Gisu/Dion ship, though her being aromantic and dating Dion is something that is definitely possible. Like Sam, she could want a queer platonic relationship with guys.

Raz: Raz is technically an intern so I’ll add... him? I’ll be honest, I saw Raz as a cis man (boy? considering Raz is younger would boy be a better word? idk), but then I started seeing trans Raz, both transmasc and transfem. And I really like both of those ideas. Kinda leaning a bit more towards the transmasc idea, but honestly transfem Raz where she realizes she’s a woman later in life and has Lilly to help is something really nice to think about. So Raz’s gender is in the air for me, but I do think Raz would like women at the very least, either just women or both genders (and anything inbetween). So Raz either Raz being straight (transmasc), a lesbian (transfem), or bisexual works for me. Transmac Raz would be he/him for a long time and then go to he/they at some point, while transfem Raz would start off as she/they and then go entirely to she/her.

Excuse me for butting in but you and that rude anon are wrong for using Google to define sexuality. Wade is pansexual. In the comic book series and TV Show, Rick Grimes is depicted by the original creators as canonically straight and devoted to his wife. All his love interests are women. Daryl Dixon is more ambiguous but the creators and actor said previously that Daryl is meant to be asexual and a virgin, and they loved that. Peeta is defined as heterosexual by the way Suzanne depicted him. We have to go by the original creators intentions. Jesus and Aaron are canonically gay in the comic books where there was little LBGTB rep at the time. If someone straightened them out like I have seen some writers do for Jesus just so to pair them with their SI, then it's depressing. But this is fanfiction and ultimately you're not harming anyone. I think what is harmful is people like you and anon trying to justify sexuality with Googling articles that are just the creation of some hack but appear to back up your headcanons. You can easily respect the original creator's depiction but create your own fanfiction suiting your own tastes. I am saying this because I have friends who are heavy into Rick and Michonne and they go by official lore how devoted he is to a straight POC woman. They are a hetero pairing. It's odd to see people arguing he isn't when it's right there according to them. People can change his sexuality without trying to make out it's actually canon. But if you wish to make Rick a poly pairings with two men, then you can but there is a difference between canon and headcanons. I would advise anons to just move on and block. You can either agree or disagree with me but don't let it spoil your creating

First off anon, thank you for coming into my inbox and being at least polite with your ask. I wanna express that I don't mean to harm you or anyone with what I replied. I'm not forcing sexualities onto anyone and I was just using the research from articles I found from Google to make a point to that rude anon that you can't just assume that a character is straight.

I think it's important to research some things in a response if someone is trying to say "You can't do this because this character isn't this x, y and z, etc." If you get what I'm trying to say.

For example, how would you know about Daryl Dixon being ambiguous and that " the creators and actor said previously that Daryl is meant to be asexual and a virgin"? If you didn't google or seen an article based off an interview or just the interview itself?" So that is all I was doing. I was putting the links to articles.

On December 1, 2014 an article came out with an interview with Robert Kirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead, on the show Talking Dead, that"...Daryl Dixon is straight." The article is linked here.

BUT! On Mar 5, 2015, "The Walking Dead" Star Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon, gave a conan interview. (I added the link to the video interview) Where he weighed in on the possibility of his character, Daryl Dixon, being gay.

“If that’s the story they gave me, I would rock that story. I’m not afraid of it,” Reedus said. (The Varity article with more of that interview is here. )

So even though Kirkman stated that Daryl "is straight" the possibility is still open.

What I think is just a little hurtful is that you just assumed I am like that rude anon trying to "justify sexualities". That anon said they googled these characters and that they were straight. Without any information to back them up on it. I googled as well but came back with articles that had articles containing the information I stated. So some of the articles wasn't just some hack, they came with examples. Some from 'canon' itself.

Also, I looked into this after reading your message, but I couldn't find one article backing up your claim that Peeta is defined as heterosexual by the way Suzanne Collins depicted him.

I am a HUGE multi-shipper. I have too many ships that I love and adore. Some are canon, some are not. One pairing that's canon that I love is in fact Rick and Michonne, I absolutely love the way those two are devoted to one another and would do anything for each other and their family. But, I also ship Rick x Daryl for fun, I know they will NEVER be canon but it's fun to read fanfictions and watch fanvids with those two.

So please just don't assume that I am trying to take away from canon relationships when I create ocs for canon characters that are already in a relationship.

So I agree with you Anon, when you said "this is fanfiction and ultimately you're not harming anyone." It is something I whole heartedly agree with and think it is so so important. I make my characters for fun and I like thinking about their dynamics with other canon characters or in that particular world.

The appeal of QL (Queer Love = BL & GL):

It's unapologetically queer.

The plot is secondary to the queer content. Every family member and every bodyguard in KinnPorsche is gay. Every student in The Eclipse is gay (Namo x Wat are canon in the upcoming book!). Having an arranged marriage in a country that doesn't recognize marriage equality didn't matter to Cutie Pie. Proposing to your parallel-traveling boyfriend with a bag of Lay's after telling reporters that you, a famous actor, love the fuck out of your blue boy was the expected outcome in Vice Versa.

Even if there is no kissing, it's still queer. A Tale of Thousand Stars refused to let the gays be gay until the very last episode, but somehow, they were still gaying up our screens every week with their soft touches and intense stares.

People question if shows like I Told Sunset About You, Triage, Not Me, and Manner of Death should be considered BLs since they have a genuine plot beyond "Do Gay Shit." How wild is that?! Having a plot that deals with trying to overthrow your oppressors and bring down capitalism has people questioning if a show is considered BL even though two guys were having sex in a tent and another two guys were having sex in an abandoned building while another two were constantly trying to kill each other (ToddBlack supremacy!). (I'm in neither boat. I support the gays, the girls, and the goths no matter the circumstances.)

Oh, and if a hetero walks into the plot, immediate death stares. They can't sit with us unless they are there to serve the queers in their endeavors like our favorite CEO, Pil Hyun, in To My Star. If the heteros want their own little romance, that romance better be outstanding (Manow, we see you girl in Between Us), or we will spend every second being pissed about it (Gram and Gene in Not Me).

The romance element is always present even in the worst of conditions (Eternal Yesterday and 180 Degrees Longitude Passes Through Us) and burying a gay is seen as highly controversial for most of the viewers (HIStory 3: Make Our Days Count). Every issue isn't because the characters are queer but there is never a doubt that the characters are queer: Bad Buddy's issue was not loving a guy but loving that one particular guy who is the sworn enemy of my family, and Semantic Error's issue was not loving a guy but loving that one particular guy who is my sworn enemy for not helping with the group project.

For a community that hasn't seen themselves represented in main stream media and when they do, it's as a comical side plot with no romance and most likely ends in death, to see ourselves not only represented but catered to is as appealing as it gets.

Even for the straight people in the fandoms, there is something here for them that is lacking in what they are currently being served in their countries, which is most likely the romance. Western media tends to think that romance is lowly and should be reserved for made for TV holiday movies about late 20-something women wanting a country escape, while Asian countries are throwing 30-year old and 40-year olds at us finding love in the workplace (Cherry Magic, Old Fashion Cupcake, GAP, and HIStory 3: Trapped <-Yes, I included it here!).

There is something for everyone here. You didn't have a great high school experience? There is a BL or 18 million to heal your soul. You couldn't play sports because of various reasons? There's a few BLs for you! College was rough for you? Well, we have some red and blue colored boys to help you through that. You want to see someone die? Let's serve you MaxTul, OhmFluke, and Japan. You like gaming? Here's Gameboys! Want to explore poly? We could have more if people weren't cowards, but we have a few. Your workplace has you stressed? Sit down and enjoy these soft workplace dramas. Want to overthrow the government? WE HAVE YOU COVERED!

TLDR: QLs are relentlessly queer in whatever way we want them to be served to us. We get to pick how we want to see ourselves, and for a community that has been underserved, underrepresented, and underappreciated, the appeal is seeing ourselves reflected back at us however we want, and that is a powerful thing.

Okay, so, to kind of map out the ship landscape of current Star Rail, here are the ships I’m currently aware of or have seen around;

- Seele and Bronya (duh)

- Trailblazer and Dan Heng/March 7th (usually it’s Caelus and Dan Heng or Stelle and March 7th. The gay is strong with these ones)

- Kafka and Himeko

- Asta and Arlan

- Welt and Himeko

- Serval and Cocolia

- Serval and Pela

- Trailblazer and pretty much any character the player wants (except for kids, ‘cos yuck). I once even saw Trailblazer shipped with the Aeon of Abundance

- A very cursed ship I saw once was Clara and Svarog, which, ew. Ewewewewewewewewew- *goes on for eternity*

- My own personal hehe ship is Welt and Natasha XD Because I use them in the same team a lot and they have big parents energy together

- Dan Heng and Jing Yuan and/or Blade (I saw a poly ship art of them three once)

- Trailblazer and trashcans, which, OTP

May 2021 Wk 3

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs.

It’s a cray cray Friday when Vietnam gets its eng subs up before GMMTV Thailand. What alter-reality are we in? Well, the Vietnamese offerings are better right now anyway. (Oooo, feel that burn.) 

Ongoing Series - Thai

Top Secret Together Ep 2 - pulping it up in the best possible way. Sure sound and production values are pants, and in classic Thai fashion the editing in post is exacerbating (rather than fixing) pacing issues, but it’s still CUTE AF. I don’t even mind the added university storyline, because they’ve got good chemistry (and a confident gay fresher after a panicked gay hazer is an old favorite... what can I say, SOTUS was my first love). We aren’t spending too much time with any one couple, so it’s weighted a lot better than Brothers was, but also character development is slow. 

Siew Sum Noi Ep 2 - Unfortunately, it’s just too hard to find, plus no subs. I’m dropping it in the hopes it comes back on my radar some day. 

Y-Destiny Ep 8 - (Thurs) It’s rough having a ghost boyfriend, half your friends are scared, the other half think you’re crazy, and kissing shortens your lifespan. This was a cute couple even if I wasn’t wild about the surrounding story. 

Close Friend Ep 5: (Dear My Star/JimmyTommy) - about high school penpals. It had to rely entirely on voice over work as the actors only meet face to face at the end. It’s a good thing they are appealing screen presences on their own, with good vocal control. It’s hard to imagine any other BL pair carrying this kinda plot. It’s by far my favorite of the series so far, and I’m not even a big JimmyTommy fan. 

Fish Upon The Sky Ep 7 - no subs. Do we care? Not really. Because we have... 

Nitiman Ep 3 - currently my favorite out of Thailand. It’s the university Thai BL i’ve been waiting for since... when was the last good one? My Engineer? Yowza. Anyway we got: head on my shoulder, baby is a floppy drunk (but still wants to be in control), proximity alert, boyfriend’s closet, seme gets seriously jelly, and a cute twist on feeding him. There’s something fun and complex about Jin’s character. He’s not a panicked bi. He knows exactly what’s going on, he just hasn’t decided if he wants Bb or not. He clearly enjoys being looked after, the compliments, and the attention, but he’s not sure if he’s going to like what happens if he gives in. I like that twist on the usual tsundere uke archetype a lot, cautious rather than willfully obtuse or freaked out. We can see Jin realizing in stages: I like this person, I like that they like me, I like the romantic attentiveness. But in the background is... do I actually want to f*k him? It’s a dynamic we don’t often see on BL. 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

HIStory 4: Close To You (Taiwan) Ep 10 fin - the most ridiculous show using BLs worst tropes in a sort of weird smoothie of bitter greens and too ripe banana. The ending was the sappiest cheesiest thing ever, like cheese syrup tapped from the cheese tree. So of course I loved it, but I’m pretty sure I giggled through all the bits meant to be profound. Because, in the end, to tolerate this show at all, you just can’t take ANY of it seriously. RECOMMENDED (with some SERIOUS reservations and trigger warnings.) Full review here. 

Be Loved in House: I Do (Taiwan) Ep 1-2 - I don’t mind a damaged seme character but this one is a bit weird for me. Like creepy Cheese in the Trap level weird. On the bright side, the story has given our tsundere uke good motivation for his angst and great existing friendships, loyalty, and likability. Plus I’m invested in the cafe owner/innocent puppy side dishes. So if it’s only the seme character I’m not jiving with, and he’s the most established actor, it should all turn out fine. I believe in you, Taiwanese BL. 

Papa & Daddy (Taiwan) Ep 6 fin - speaking of belief. This such a good show but they gave us a cliffhanger ending. Now we must hope against hope for season two. That’s never guaranteed with Taiwan tho. So, I’m docking a few points and saying, RECOMMENDED so long as you realize it’s a cliffhanger. 

Love is Science? (Taiwan) Ep 1-9 (BL subplot) - this is a good het romance, but the fact that the BL subplot is a beautifully acted disaster bi + confident gay means you’re hearing about it whether you want to or not. Plus they just added in some GL! Come on! I gotta support Taiwan normalizing queer to this extent. They are fighting the good fight and if I also have to watch a career lady and her much younger softest straight boi get it on, too? Twist my arm with that service sub subtext. Go on Taiwan, TWIST IT. It’s on Viki. Join the revolution.   * Incidentally if you actually like the D/s het dynamic of this show, I highly recommend Japanese Kimi wa Petto - career woman keeps a hot young dancer boy as a pet. Oh yes, an actual pet, that IS the pitch. Never doubt Japan when kink is on the line. It’s also on Viki. Go get your kink on, thank me later. (If it helps: That was not a request.)  

Most Peaceful Place 2 (Vietnam) Ep 2 (AKA 5) - love triangles aren’t my thing, but if you’re gonna do it short form, by all means bring in the lead’s other BL pairing so the chemistry is on point. Now I've no idea who I want him to end up with. Can’t they just be in a poly triad? 

My Lascivious Boss (Vietnam) Ep 7 - I’m still enjoying it a lot. It’s still unabashedly queer and the tension is ramping up. We now have secret identity, blackmail, femme fatale, faen fatale, and incoming seme confrontation. Best of all, the series is still airing, which makes it longer than any other Vietnamese BL I’ve seen (aside from Tein Bromance - which is just too weird to count).

SEVEN PROJECT TEASERS

No one is entirely sure what Studio Wabi Sabi’s Seven Project/7Project will entail. 

It might be like Close Friend (1 episode per couple, no linking), 

or Y-Destiny (2 episodes per couple, loosely linked), 

or The En of Love (4 episodes per couple, linked but independent consecutive stories). 

They’re giving the couple’s arcs separate titles. So each one would be what? Seven Project: Once Upon a Time or the like? We’re in Taiwanese title territory people and NO ONE WANTS TO GO THERE. Anygay... 

Once Upon a Time is the BounPrem (og UWMA) anchor story, and seems to be the most dramatic and likely saddest. These two can handle most of what’s thrown at them at this juncture, so it should be good. 

Vs Love is a BoomPeak (og Make it Right) university vehicle. Since I thought Boom was done with our nonsense, I couldn’t be more thrilled and surprised this pair is doing another show together. I don’t think either of them are the greatest actors but I find Peak very endearing and Boom charismatic on screen, so I’ll watch. 

Would You be My Love is the hotly anticipated SantaEarth launch. They’re a (cultivated) IRL ship and Earth is an established BL actor. They have great chemistry and high energy so this could be lots of fun. 

We are also getting a GL from this series from established BL actresses Samantha and Pineare. Nothing teased yet on that, but I’m looking forward to this installment the most. Also curious to see how the ladies handle the branding and promo side, not to mention the culture. (Thailand variety shows gonna force *girls* to play the Pepero game?) 

Secret Crush on You upcoming Thai BL with no release date, co-produced by and featuring (but NOT staring) Saint and directed by Cheewin (sigh) with all fresh faces. (Previously known as Stalker the series.) It looks like pure pulp and I’m not wild about the plot but could be better than expected as it’s adapted from a novel. Cheewin is an okay director when he has an actual story to follow. 

Don’t Say No the series. Coming from the producers of TharnType this is the JaFirst vehicle many have been waiting for. Friends to lovers + a good boy/bad boy pairing on a sports romance foundation. It’s basketball so they tapped Meen as well (he’s semi-pro). The bad news? You get one guess as to who is writing the darn thing? Yep it’s MAME. So, ya know, expect some slam dunk kidnapping, a light dribbling of rape, and me turning into a basketcase. AKA... 

Will I have to live blog this series in order to survive it? That seems to be the only way I can. So probably. Which means the bad sports puns will continue. Look, if I’m suffering, SO ARE YOU! 

Rumors of a new YinWar vehicle The Best Story (mini series) coming in July. Also rumors that their previously announced Love Mechanics (full length series) has either been delayed, is facing money issues, or is moving studios, or all three. 

Breaking News 

DELAYED (I’m talking these three off the watch list until we get new airing dates) 

Love Area’s release was pushed out but it got a trailer. 

Golden Blood was supposed to drop Weds but comments in MDL report that it is delayed due to C19.  

Love’s Outlet (Taiwan) is supposed to have started a 50 episode run (only 3-5 min each, what utter nonsense). Sadly, this delay is due to a surge in cases in Taiwan which was doing so well, but also doesn’t have many inoculations. 

Bad Buddy has started workshopping at GMMTV actual. 

Kang Insoo’s BTS for Nobleman Ryu’s Wedding is SO FLIPPING CUTE. You have to watch it. Trust me, I don’t rec behind the scenes stuff often.

underrated SFF books (YA and Adult)

So uhm, since I keep seeing the same books on my dash all the time (and I like them too, just...there’s more! to read!) here’s a list of less popular SFF books, divided into YA and Adult. I’ve tried to mention when there is lgbt rep and the trigger warnings. Also, books written by poc will be in bold. Please point out any typo or mistake or if I’ve forgotten specific rep/tw mentions.

All of these are books that I’ve read and enjoyed (by enjoyed I mean anything from 3 stars and above), but if anyone wants to add titles please feel free to do so!!

YA:

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi: beautifully written, fairytale-like story rich in mythology (inspired by several Hindu myths. There’s a full list on goodreads indicated by the author herself). Roshani’s prose is gorgeous.

A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi: it’s a companion novel to The Star-Touched Queen, but both can be read as a standalone. I liked this one more than its companion and I particularly loved how the romance was written (slow burn, but specifically, the author really highlights the mutual respect between the characters, we love to see it).

The Young Elites by Marie Lu: fantasy trilogy set in a world inspired by Renaissance Italy, in which children who survived a mysterious and deadly illness ended up with strange and dangerous powers. Secret societies and a female villain!

The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu: historical fantasy following Mozart’s sister, Nannerl, a girl as talented as her brother, but afraid of being forgotten because of the lack of opportunities she has to be seen and heard. Nuanced sibling relationship, no romance.  

The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski: fantasy f/f romance! Both a coming of age story set in a society with a rigid class system and a slow burn f/f romance with a lot of banter. TW: abuse.

The Weight of Feathers by Anna-Marie McLemore: magical realism. The book follows two families of traveling performers that have been locked in a feud for over a generation. This was the author’s debut and I remember getting an arc of it and being impressed by both the prose and how the forbidden love trope was handled.

When the Moon was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore: another magical realism novel. One of the main characters is a trans boy and the book focuses on issues of racism and gender. One of my favorite YA!

Strange Grace by Tessa Gratton: fantasy romance set in a village that periodically sacrifices a young man in order to keep a deal with the devil that ensures their prosperity. Also, polyamorous and non-binary rep.

The Rise of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee: first book in a duology following avatar Kyoshi’s life. It explores the political and cultural aspect of the Earth Kingdom and Kyoshi’s past. Bisexual rep.

Descendant of the Crane by Joan He: sort of a murder mystery fantasy, as the main character finds herself suddenly thrust into power once her father has been murdered. The story has a slow build up to a last part full of twists and machinations and it features lots of court intrigue. Warning: the ending is quite open and afaik there isn’t a sequel planned as of now.

The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd-Jones: a quite unique take on zombies influenced by Welsh mythology (it’s super cool). The novel follows Ryn and their siblings, as they try to get by after their parents’ death by working as gravediggers. Only well, the dead don’t always stay dead. The characters read a bit younger than they are imo. There is chronic pain rep.

The Magnolia Sword by Sherry Thomas: retelling of the original ballad of Mulan. The book follows Mulan, who’s trained her whole life to win a duel for a priceless heirloom, as she joins the army. There’s a lot of political and historical details, which I really appreciated. Do not go into it expecting a fun adventure though. The descriptions of war aren’t extremely graphic, but be aware of the fact that most of the book is set during a conflict.

The Candle and The Flame by Nafiza Azad: standalone fantasy set in a city on the Silk Road! It’s a quite slow-paced tale about love, family and politics. It has lush descriptions of landscapes and cultures (and FOOD, there are some really great descriptions of food). It’s a very atmospheric book and while I struggled a bit with the pace I’d still recommend it.

Forest of a Thousand Lanters by Julie C. Dao: sort of an East Asian inspired retelling of Snow White, but following the Evil Queen before she became Snow White’s stepmother. I honestly haven’t read its sequel (which should focus on Snow White herself), but I do think this can be read and enjoyed as a standalone too.

The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner: it’s hard to point out exactly what this series is about because it has evolved so much with time. It starts out as classic quest/adventure series with The Thief (which may seem a classic and simple book, but is actually full of foreshadowing and has a really clever set up), but develops into a complex and intriguing political fantasy in The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia (and then goes back to the quest theme in book 5, Thick as Thieves).

Adult:

A Fist of Permutations in Lightning and Wildflowers by Alyssa Wong: I’m cheating with this one because it’s technically a short story but I love Alyssa Wong’s stories so I’m putting it here anyway. It can be read for free and you should just...read it.

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang: grimdark fantasy (TW: abuse, self harm, rape, drug abuse), inspired by Chinese history. It’s adult, but follows younger MCs and the unique blend of different historical periods/inspirations makes it extremely interesting. The characters are extremely fucked up in the best possible way, plus the use of shamanism is awesome. Please make sure you check all the TW before reading.

The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang: a Japanese-inspired militaristic fantasy, with elemental magic, a badass housewife dealing with her past and hiding a sword in her kitchen’s floor. It has interesting and nuanced family dynamics and a great reflection on propaganda and the use of narratives.

Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri: first book in an epic fantasy duology inspired by Mughal India (TW: abuse, slavery). I really liked both Empire of Sand and its companion and I find them pretty underrated. Both books have great slow burn romance (with a focus on mutual trust and respect) and focus on culture, religion, self acceptance and politics.

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: a fantasy bildungsroman set in Mexico during the Jazz age. It’s a great approach to adult SFF as it follows a young girl on a life changing adventure. It features Mayan mythology and a god slowly becoming human (this trope is everything!).

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden: a coming of age story inspired by Russian folklore. The trilogy as a whole has one of the best arcs I’ve ever seen: each book is perfectly self-contained and has its own arc, but also fits perfectly in the bigger picture of the trilogy. The atmosphere is amazing, the cast of characters is extremely well developed. Also frost demons are better than men.

The Binding by Bridget Collins: historical fantasy, but with very minimal fantasy elements. It’s set in a world vaguely reminiscent of 19th century England. I’d say this book is about humans and self discovery. It’s about cowardice and the lies we tell ourselves and those we wish we could tell ourselves. Gay rep. (TW: abuse, sexual assault, pretty graphic suicide scene).

The Divine Cities trilogy by Robert Jackson Bennett: starting with City of Stairs, it follows a female diplomat and spymaster(!!). The whole trilogy features an interesting discussion about godhood, religion, fanatism, politics, without ever being boring or preachy. It has complex and rich world building and a pretty compelling mystery.

Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett: heist fantasy following a thief as she’s hired to steal a powerful artifact that may change magical technology as she knows it. Set in a Venice-like merchant city. Also, slow burn f/f romance.

Jade City by Fonda Lee: sort of a gangster urban fantasy, heavily inspired by wuxia and set in an Asian-inspired metropolis. It follows a pretty big cast of characters, each with their own journey and development. It features nuanced family dynamics and a lot of political and economical subplots. Not extremely prominent, but book 2 features m/m side rep.

Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse: inspired by Native American culture and specifically by the idea of subsequent worlds. It has a kickass MC and a good mix of original elements and typical UF tropes. TW: the book isn’t extremely violent but there is death and some gore.

A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine: space opera inspired by the Mexica and middle period Byzantium. It focuses on topics like colonialism and the power of narratives and language. It has one of the best descriptions of what it’s like to live in between spaces I’ve ever read. Also very interesting political intrigue and has a slow burn f/f romance (and a poly relationship recalled through flashbacks). I ranted a lot about it already.

Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee: a Korean-inspired space opera with a magic system based on math. It’s honestly quite convoluted and difficult to follow, but it also features some of the best political intrigue I’ve ever read. Plenty of lying, backstabbing and mind games. It also features lesbian and bisexual rep and an aroace side character (TW: mass shooting, sexual assault, abuse). I also really recommend Yoon Ha Lee’s short-story collection Conservation of Shadows.

The long way to a small angry planet by Becky Chambers: character driven space opera featuring a found family journeying through space. A fun read, that also deals with topics such as sexuality and race. Quite easy to go through, as the world building and plot aren’t particularly complex themselves. f/f romance.  

The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo: an Asian-inspired fantasy novella that gives a voice to people usually silenced by history. It follows a cleric (non binary rep) as they chronicle the story of the late empress, retold through objects that she used in her life. It focuses on bonds between women and the power that lies in being unnoticed. f/f side rep.

The Black God’s Drums by P. Djèlí Clark: an urban fantasy novella, based on Orisha mythology and set in an alternate, sort of steampunk, New Orleans. I really like how creative Clark’s worlds are and how good he is at writing female characters (which rarely happens with male authors).

The haunting of tram car 015 by P. Djèlí Clark: novella set in an alternate steampunk Cairo populated by supernatural entities. It’s set in the same world of a Dead Djinn in Cairo, which is a short story you can read for free.

This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone: epistolary novella set during a time-travel war. It has gorgeous writing and an amazing f/f romance. As a novella, it’s quite short but it’s beautifully crafted and so complex for such a short book!

The Citadel of Weeping Pearls by Aliette de Bodard: a novella set in the Xuya universe (a series of novellas/short stories set in a timeline where Asia became dominant, and where the space age has empires of Vietnamese and Chinese inspiration), but can be read as a standalone. It’s a space opera featuring a disappeared citadel and the complex relationship between the empress and her daughter as war threatens her empire.

One for My Enemy by Olivie Blake: self-published urban fantasy following two rival families in New York. Sort of a Romeo and Juliette retelling but with gangster families and magic. Honestly recommend all of her books, I love how Olivie writes and especially how she writes female characters.

My Quaxo/Mistoffelees Headcanon Masterlist (Ongoing)

Quaxo is the name of his regular form, Mistoffelees is his sparkly boy name.

Since his awakening, most of the cats have started just calling him Misto, but Tugger, Macavity, and Munk still use Quaxo. Elders only call him Quaxo when he's in hot water.

He's 100% into Tugger, but during the first ball acted very indifferent, because he wasn't certain about these emotions. Later started a relationship with him

He REALLY looks up to Bustopher Jones. Constantly wants his attention when he's around. Tries to impress him with his magic

He got his powers from Macavity, and was scared of himself for a while because of it. Eventually, he started using his powers to help out, and everyone became used to them. For instance, to control the Jellicle Ball lighting, or to lift the trunk for Jenny's song.

His powers include: Light manipulation, lightening from fingertips, object manipulation, making cats disappear/reappear, sparkles/mini stars from his hands, energy reading and awareness of the astral plane at times, high reception of energy/physic messages, telepathy (but not mind reading), etc.

He wears special white gloves when not actively blasting lightening everywhere, because he's still harnessing that power. They prevent him from accidentally frying somebody.

He has the same psychic senses as Coricopat and Tantomile, and is very sensitive to energy shifts and different energies.

He often goes to Cori and Tanto for help controlling his magic

He can act very shy and aloof around cats he's not too familiar with. He knows just about everyone in the Junkyard though

What is your opinion on straight passing privilege? I (bi) don’t think it exists, but a close (lesbian) friend of mine insists that it does bc “You can hold hands with your SO (nb cis passing man) in public without risking being the victim of a hate crime.” I have been researching but keep seeing this same argument coming up, and I’m unsure and don’t want to be making anyone upset if I’m being ignorant here.

I think that there's a lot of fucked up internet politics around who is and isn't allowed in the community. Which is ridiculous.

Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Pan, Poly, Ace, Aro, Trans, Intersex, etc.

The only people who shouldn't be in the community are cishets, and pedos, none of that 'it's a sexuality' nonsense, it's predation.

The concept of straight-passing is ridiculous, primarily because it's all based on assumptions. If you're in an m/f relationship, and you are both cis and heterosexual, it's straight.

But here's the catch, if you identify as any LGBPT+ then it's not straight.

Two trans people in an m/f relationship is not straight passing.

Two bi people in an m/f is not straight passing, it's queer babes, it's in the name. If you're bi and your partner is like, straight, it's still queer from your side of the fence.

It's the 'pick a side' argument from another direction, this straight passing nonsense. Where you are villified by the straights if you have a same-sex relationship (or fetishised, let's be real, every part of the acronymn has it's own p*rn category aimed at straight people with a kink), and if you have a relationship with the opposite gendered person, the queer community gets cranky.

Two things:

1) Is this friend between 13 and 25? Bc they could still be working this out or being mentored by t*rfs, or had some bad info. IT could be jealousy or fear of being open where you live. Perhaps you could question what makes her say that; has she had a bad experience, or did someone say this to her. where are you Are you in america? are there snake wielding jesus warriors near you? Blink SOS if you need an escape route, child

2) Who wins when everyone in the queer community is divided and policing one another? Telling everyone off for dating this person or that person or not at all

I didn't get an invite to the big queer conference to make these decisions, so like, they're not valid. It's some pocket of internet active idiots who think they can speak for everyone.

What we need to do is stop pulling this bullshit on one another and get back to asking just why the fuck it's not okay for people who are perceived as not-straight or cis etc to hold hands in public.

There's a problem for every facet of the acronym, babes and dudes and theys. Lesbians are heavily sexualised by straight cis dudes. Gays are heavly fetisihed by straight cis women. to the point where even saying 'I'm gay' is considered to be an obscene, sexual act that you should not let children be exposed to.

And there's always someone from the opposite gender who thinks they 'are confused' or 'haven't met the right (gender) person yet', or 'they could fix them with their magic genitals' or mumbled religious nonsense. There's such intense stereotypes that people can't stand women who look butch, but also you can't 'really' be a lesbian unless you are' or gay men can't just be, like, a normal dude, instead of some flamboyant in-your-face charicature.

Of course people who match the stereotype exist, too. And they get no respect for fitting into the stereptypes either, it's just another reason for disrespect. There's no winning.

Bi's can't talk to anyone without hearing a question of a threesome come up or being attacked from either side for coice of partner.

Pans, same, but also kitchenware jokes. Both Bi and Pan are considered sluts and whores and can't decide or are going to cheat, etc. Or the 'you're being special snowflakes', 'choose a side', 'you're secretly gay and won't admit / you're secretly straight and want attention' etc.

Ace/Aro - everyone under this banner gets the whole 'you just haen't found the right person' or 'when you're older/you're a late bloomer' or 'how do you know?' or 'maybe you're straight/gay and haven't worked it out yet?' invalidating them completely and trying to push sex onto them. The queer community has always let Ace and Aro in under the Bi banner, and they are welcome. But the internet community, usually young people, are tearing each other to shreds over it lmao.

Chill.

Non-binary, trans, intersex. They have been here for ages, but people from one community try to destroy their credibility, despite them existing since humanity has. It's big on p*rn and fetish sites too, lot of straight dudes think these things are hot and sexy, but would spit on trans people in the street. Hypocrites (I mean, every second low-brow comedy movie out there makes a thai-l*dyb*y joke, and how it 'doesn't count' like yikes).

Nb has only just been recognised, which is funny bc society literally made up gender and the rules and pretended that was how its encoded in DNA lmao.

Transpeople have it bad though. Between the cis straights, the cis queer community (primarily t*rfs and those who fall for misinformation) and the fetishists, and the medical community who treats them like an illness rather than people. Like, they are afforded respect if they 'pass', but even then it's still an EW factor.

Transwomen are seen as 'men in dresses who want to break into women's spaces' and treated horrifically; assaults are very high. Transmen are seen as butch women, and 'gender tr*itors' by the Crazy Motherfuckers we mentioned before; their assaults are high. I remember, but did not understand at the time bc I recall i was little, that there was a gameshpw bachelorette style and there was a big twist. You know what the twist was? That the bachelorette they'd been dating and trying to win over... was trans. I don't think that she knew it would be the big twist, either; of the two men remaining, bother were angry and one might have been sick. Might be on youtube.

But like, that's funny to the non-queer community. They put a huge fucking target on this woman's back, put her in danger of being hurt, abused, killed, by anyone who watched it. And intersex people (called h*rmaphrodites for a long time even by medical personnel) were also a p*rn category and/or medical curiosity for centuries. Not to mention all the cases of parents who just went with 'make them a (specific gender)' if there was mixed presentation, at birth, and got mad at the kids for being like "Hey so, you flipped the coin wrong and I'm ___" even thought the potential for this was always on the cards.

And the parents often make a big messa bout how their baby ___ is dead and gone, even if they DO accept the person/child as who they really are. It's like, I get it they have changed but you didn't mourn their first haircut or lost baby tooth like this and that was change too, chill.

Straight-passing is a projection and a weapon. Like, is it the people in the relationship's fault that society looks at the pair and decides they are m/f, straight and cis? Nah, it's what people are conditioned assume and that's on them.

The real issue here is that any of us are at risk of a hate crime for daring to even show affection in public. That even in safe spaces, 'allies' and those wise enough not to be openly homo/trans/bi/pan/ace/aro/other phobic are still side-eyeing you and wanting to talk 'for you' without listening to the community itself.

We have bigger issues than this, and your friend (and some others on the internet) need to get a grip and prioritise.

just renewed for a fourth season after two years (this feeling is very familiar to leverage fans)

the first episode of season four aired last night and IM SCREAMING the writers served us a five course meal

the main love story includes waverly earp, a CANON (officially as of 4.01) bisexual girl falling in love with nicole haught, a lesbian cop-turned-sheriff (that’s a slight spoiler, so sorry about that) and both of them are main characters

wynonna earp, another main character, has a complicated relationship with two different men and is not slut shamed for it and is never put down about it

I’m serious- the healthiest and most stable relationship in the show is between waverly and nicole, so wlw nation rise

wynonna and waverly are descendants of the great gunslinger (and demon killer) wyatt earp, who ended up getting a curse on his future generations. the story of the show is centered around wynonna being the chosen heir having to fight demons and try to break the curse for good

doc holiday is another main character- yes, that doc holiday. he’s one of wynonna’s love interests and he has such a pure and loving relationship with waverly. he’d literally die for her and move heaven and hell to make sure she’s safe (that’s literally canon)

jeremy comes in around season two if I remember correctly. canon gay. gets in a relationship with another canon gay character whose name I am blanking on. they are very loving and very pure

literally, in 4.01, when armed military men are breaking into the earp homestead and he doesn’t know what to do, he literally says: “gays only?” lol they didn’t respect that answer

the show has so many good quips and one-liners. so many hilarious lines. it can be an angsty show at times but they definitely balance it out with humor and wlw softness between waverly and nicole

wynonna has a baby in season two and literally calls herself a milf

it also made fans faint because they have been calling nicole “daddy” for like six years and nicole was referred to as daddy three (3) times in 4.01

this show is NOT AFRAID to say things like gay, lesbian, etc. at one point someone tweeted at emily andreas (the writer) asking her to amp up the gay energy and she responded that she would

literally, emily andreas is on the same level as john rogers with trustability and dedication to fans

2. motherland: fort salem (my sideblog is @fortsalem)

au where during the salem witch trials a witches named sarah alder made an agreement with the government that witches would serve for the us army in exchange for not being systematically hunted down and killed

THIS IS NOT MILITARY PROPAGANDA. sorry, I just had to make this point early on because it’s not even though it might seem like it in the beginning. literally by the end of the season you see it’s very corrupt

since this is an alternate history of the united states, in this universe there are no heteronorms. literally, there’s literally no words for lesbian and bisexual that they use because it’s so normalized and common and accepted that there’s no need for terms like that

the main love story is of star-crossed raelle and scylla. raelle comes from a poor family and is a talented healer, and (this isn’t technically a spoiler because you find out in episode one) scylla is a member of the spree

the spree is a terrorist organization of witches that protests the compliance witches are forced into by having to join the military or die/be imprisoned

scylla is supposed to turn raelle to the “dark side” but falls so deeply in love with her that she can’t do it (THATS TRUE LOVE FOLKS)

the students at fort salem (the military school) are divided into groups of three: the main group being focused on is composed of raelle, tally, and abigail

tally craven is a pure-hearted baby and I’d die for her. she is very idealistic about fighting in the military (but don’t worry that’s fixed by the end of the season)

abigail bell weather comes from a high military family and is kinda really stuck up about it, but she’s humbled a lot by the end of the season. this girl has LAYERS (they all do, but abigail goes through a lot and goes from very stuck up and stuck up the military’s ass to questioning everything she knows)

the trio starts off rocky, especially between raelle and abigail, because raelle blames abigail’s mother for her mother’s death (her mother’s unit was led by abigail’s mother)

the beltane episode literally hits you in the face with how there are literally no heteronorms whatsoever. they do this sacred dance where by the end they will end up with the people they are destined to spend the celebration with (“trust the dance”). raelle makes friends with a gay guy and they spend the celebration making fun of the sex noises around them and become gay friends for life. abigail has sex with two (2) guys who kiss each other. a group of four girls went off together. a group of two girls and a guy went off together. and sex isn’t shamed. at all. in fact, it’s respected as a part of life. and y’all, literally this representation was OFF THE CHARTS

the witch’s most powerful tool is their voice,,, think about that for a minute

it’s an all girls school so there are like no guys whatsoever minus the beltane episode and a couple others

imma start off by saying that season three doesn’t exist. don’t watch season three. don’t do it. the disappointment is real

ANYWAYS

the central love story is between an interracial couple (a white guy and his black girlfriend that has a native american stepfather) that turns into a loving polyamorous relationship

maddie, the girlfriend, is amazing and incredibly smart and the first two seasons (and the beginning of the third) accentuate that and they never downplay her because she’s a black woman like many shows and movies do. she’s a smart stem woman and we stan her so hard. she’s also bisexual.

ben, the guy, comes from a rich family that are basically the hotshots of the town and own the fishing company that the community works for. his dad is hella untrustable. ben doesn’t trust him and neither should you. he is kindhearted and smart and respectful, and at one point teaches a merman about consent after being kissed by him (and he didn’t even #nohomo it which was AMAZING)

now to the mermaids

mermaids are apex predators. they are very dangerous. they are very strong. they’re also wickedly smart, canon smarter than humans

the story begins when donna, ryn’s sister, is captured by a fishing boat and carted off to a military facility. ryn comes to land to try to find and save her. (she literally choses her name because she sees a character on a kid’s tv show saying “I am ryn” which is also the first thing in english that she can say)

she ends up being helped by ben and maddie and legit is like these humans are hot imma learn english for them

there’s a lot of really cool and thought out lore as well as TONS of thoughtful marine biology science that makes sense

oh and transforming from mermaid to human? painful as FUCK. realistic depictions of having your body literally transform into something else

humans are wrecking the oceans and that’s a heavy theme of the show

oil rigs are poisoning the water (making them infertile) and killing mermaids with their sonic drilling

so ben and maddie lowkey commit an act of ecoterrorism but it’s chill

“ben and maddie are love” they’re poly, bitches

they come together in a natural, organic way

very healthy and communicative

ben’s alright but ryn and maddie are amazing

don’t watch season three if you don’t want to be majorly disappointed. the writers listened to the homophobic trolls on instagram and broke up the polyamorous relationship and I’ll NEVER forgive them for that. seasons one and two are amazing though. just don’t watch the third one.

bioware rant okok

I’ve felt the need to speak on this for a while and I don’t quite know how to start this off so bare with me- I’ve never felt like Bioware was performative in their activism. So allow me to read off some points I’ve had wracking through my brain for a hot minute. 

So Mass Effect was released in 2007, and if you’ve played the game you’ll know that there is an entire alien race that has no gender or lacks the concept of one; they reproduce through the melding of the brain, and in their society there is no actual need for sex in terms of reproduction. A lot of asari characters we see do present in a feminine way, but they actually have no concept of gender. They have little to no care for it, they might use female pronouns, gender ambigious pronouns like they/them or any variation of that, and even male pronouns. We see this in conversations about asari/asari mating as one of the pair is refered to as the ‘father’ depending on which carried the child or not- where as in human society, they would both be referred to as the mother. Asaris are also able to reproduce with any of the species in mass effect, as the product of that union will always be asari though they will carry certain traits of the ‘father’ species. Ie, a krogan union, a human female union- They are still the ‘father’. 

This caused a fair bit of controversy, especially since as a female player you are able to romance an asari. Back in 2007, there was little to no discussion about the possibility of there being more genders than male and female, or even nonbinary. Due to this, the games were banned in certain countries for having a wlw sex scene. 

Fast forward to 2009, Dragon Age Origins is released. You have two party members who are both bisexual (Zevran and Lelianna) and two straight relationships made available to you. And even the option of open relationships or poly relationships was introduced. They never upheld any sort of negative stereotypes about either of the same sex relationships in any way, shape or form. 

In Dragon Age 2, there is a wide variety of character romances accessable to the player as either gender; I actually think there’s only one character you can only romance as a female player, and he was only a DLC character. For the first 2 games, there was no mention of homophobia or shame for same sex relationships. Even in a continent unified under one banner of church, there was no law against same sex as we see in our own religions in our society. 

 Inqusition (2014), a trans male character (Krem) was introduced to us, with a progressed backstory a lot unlike most characters that are not integral to the game. There is a specific dialogue choice that you get in a cutscene where your character gets schooled for asking transphobic questions. 

Also in Inquisition, you meet Dorian Pavus, a mage from Tevinter from a wealthy noble family. This is the first mention of homophobia in the entire series from what I’ve seen- Dorian comes from a long line of nobles in Tevinter, and as you know they all battle for dominance when it comes to who is in power, and to garuntee you stay in power you need an heir. His father expected Dorian to enter a marriage with a woman, produce an heir and take over his place, as his child would do after him. Dorian tried to live up to his, but he did not want to live a lie understandably so, and marry a woman he knew he could never love, as he prefered the company of men. In Tevinter, same sex couples are kept behind closed doors, they are free to do so but it is a badge of shame on a family to not keep a bloodline going. Tevinter is however not part of Thedas, and they have a different Chantry with different rules, however the Chantry is not in rule there, the mages/Magisters are. 

And also in Dragon Age, the discrimination and racism towards the elves throughout all 3 games so far is widely known to be linked back towards racism in our society towards people of colour, specificially black people.  And while there are people of colour in the game, there was no distinction between race in terms of humans. The racism was towards elves, dwarves, and Qunari. I brought up the elves in this case because despite the fact they were freed as slaves, they were segregated from humans, kept in factions of cities called the ‘Alienages’ and forced to live in slums, while also being used for cheap labour or hate crimed regularly by rich humans. This is a clear play on the way that african americans were segregated in the early 1900s, and the injustices they faced throughout that and still to this day as we see the systemic racism now uphold in crimes commited by the police to citizens.

In ME; Andromeda, there’s a character Peebee that is strongly implied that she is neurodivergent; autistic/aspergers to be specific.

These are the points I can think of from the top of my head, and currently we see game companies under fire for being inclusive in their work, people angry over trans characters and gay characters, people complaining that it is performative and that they are simply ‘throwing us a bone’. However I don’t think that Bioware has ever added characters or concepts into their games for a gold star on activism, I think they come from the actual beliefs of the game developers. The characters are all complex and written well, they aren’t just thrown together last minute to keep people happy. I personally think Bioware has always done well in terms of representing marginalized groups in our society.

1. your all time favorite bl and why

My favorite bl is so chopped up that the story line makes no sense at all, thanks to the censors -- y'all know I'm talkin' about Guardian. My very first Asian drama and it will always have the highest place in my heart. Shen Wei waiting fucking centuries for his soulmate Zhao Yunlan is all I lived for in 2018. I've rewatched it far too many times to be healthy. My baybies.

2. that one bl that scarred you for life

I have to agree the last episode of HIStory 3: Make Our Days Count gutted me. And I was loving the show so much -- I was looking forward to it since I had seen Wayne Song in Age of Rebellion, and they BLEW IT ALL TO HELL in the end. Not a bit salty about it now, though (breathing deeeeply)...

3. is there any bl that made you feel very single?

Fuck yes, Tharntype, after they worked out their bullshit and became so damn cute together. I am married and they STILL made me feel single. I wanted my husband to bring me snacks and kiss me as we snuggle in a twin bed, and play with ice cubes, and, well, you get it.

4. if you could change one thing from a bl, which one would it be?

From one single bl? Let's stop killing our gays -- I am looking right at you again MODC. In a more general sense, I am a touch-a-holic; I need lots of hugs, kissing, any physical demonstration of love in my bl -- A Tale of 1000 Stars waited too long before I got my kiss, smh. Otherwise such a GOOD story and the chemistry was a+++.

5. that one bl you detest (don’t hold back)

I don't really detest any bl dramas; let's say there are a few I couldn't get into, for one reason or another. Lack of chemistry, a slow story, or something else that wasn't my cup o' tea: Why R U, Addicted: Heroin, Great Men Academy, and Gameboys come first to my mind.

Dark Blue and Moonlight. I hate cheaty cheaters, but did EVERYONE in that drama have good chemistry? Whew, it was very hot in there.

Oh baby! These new Korean bl shows with their 20-minute-long episodes are simply scrumptious! But my very fav Korean bl is from Strongberry (may they be blessed): Long Time No See. Gitae and Chisoo and a happy ending. 'Nuff said.
